Utility trailers are the most versatile type on the lot. Their open, low-side design makes loading and unloading quick, which suits landscaping equipment, building materials, ATVs and motorcycles, mowers, and general hauling. If you need weather protection or security instead, look at enclosed trailers.

Start with your vehicle’s tow rating, then work backward from the trailer’s GVWR — that number is the maximum loaded weight, not the payload. GVWR is the maximum the trailer can weigh fully loaded, including the trailer itself. Payload is what you can actually put on it — GVWR minus the trailer’s empty weight. As an example, a trailer rated at 14,000 lb GVWR that weighs 4,000 lbs empty gives you roughly 10,000 lbs of usable payload. Always size to payload, not GVWR, and check the figures on the specific unit you are considering.
